Gluon for Micro.blog

A beautiful, nimble and customisable app purposely built for Micro.blog. Now archived. Thank you to all through the years ✌️❤️

Gluon is a highly opinionated, but customisable, cross platform app for Android and iOS for Micro.blog.

If you’d like to find out more, please visit the Gluon website. Or keep scrolling to read the development blog.

With Gluon, you can do the following:

Gluon, now available as a wearable (literally)

I'm happy to announce that the Gluon app is now officially available as the most personal device ever to have graced technology! On a T-Shirt, Sweatshirt or even Tank top!

Loads of colours for you to choose from and a brief hint at what icon colours are coming to an app near you!

Update: some of you have expressed that a wearable might not be for you. If that’s you, I have set up a “buy me a coffee” page where you can also support Gluon’s development.

Buying a wearable will support development

I know it's a lot to ask during surreal times... however if Gluon has made a difference in your life and you want to support the app, and myself, I ask you to keep yourself fully clothed with a Gluon wearable (and if you want to take it off and sleep on it, that's totally fine too).

I'm forever looking at making Gluon profitable without having to bow down to the gatekeepers. So this is step one of this plan.

Prices start at $29 for a T-Shirt, of that $5 makes its way to me, minus 25% for local tax payments (gotta keep the tax man happy) and conversion fees of course (so $4 if I'm lucky). $4 is a lot to me and it's more than I would ever hope to get.

Gluon has been in development for some time and will continue to be developed into the future and having support from you really means a lot.

HERE IS THE LINK

You can buy your super awesome wearable here.

Here is what the default colour looks like 🤤

Service is provided by the awesome folks at Cotton Bureau! 90% of all of my T-shirts are from here...

Thanks for reading and thank you so much for all your support so far. Gluon would not exist if it wasn't for the community at Micro.blog!

If you want to wait to buy a wearable… that’s fine too - they’re “on-demand” so it’ll be there when you’re ready.

Now excuse me whilst I buy a few myself 😍

Coming soon to Gluon… … documentation.

Thank you to everyone sending in bug reports for the Gluon beta. Really appreciate it! I know that I sometimes don’t reply if it’s minor… I see all of them, so don’t worry.

✌️❤️

I’m toying with the idea to re-do most of Gluon’s theming and underlying navigation engine. I know it will lead to many weeks and months of work… but I think it will be worth it - especially for what I’m planning.

Will decide after 2020.4 shipped.

Pushed out beta build 5 for Gluon 2020.4. Includes a few timeline sync changes… Also pushed out the Android 2020.4 first beta… which includes all updates in the iOS build. More to come 😋

Going to attempt to re-write most of the Gluon feed fetcher… I will probably fail.

💬 Quotes added to Gluon’s discover more section… whoop! Just don’t quote me.

Just working on adding Tagmoji to the compose screen on Gluon. Thanks to //Jason Burk for the inspiration ✌️

Thanks again to Manton for adding the gardening discover section on Micro.blog. If you use Gluon, you can get right to it in the Discover More section.

I removed an earlier screenshot of this, on the Micro.blog timeline, by accident… so here is a preview:

Allows you to remove items from the timeline. Hosted blog post on MB will come soon too (separate from the timeline).

😏

The Gluon Image Proxy is now also running within my own infrastructure and no longer on Heroku. Zero downtime whilst migrating. I love Cloudflare!

Manton has added new emoji to Micro.blog for Discover. Get them whilst they’re fresh in Gluon:

I just made the first commit for Gluon version 2020.4 😋

Gluon 2020.3 release notes

Last night, I released version 2020.3 of Gluon for both iOS and Android.

It's been in the works for about one month, with all you great testers. Thank you so very much for you continued feedback, bug reports and feature requests.

Whilst Gluon is "opinionated" I believe it's being shaped by the community at large. I hope this trend continues and urge everyone, that would like to, write in and give me your suggestions on what you want to see next.

Release notes

Here are the release notes for this release. There are many little tweaks here and there and I doubt I have them all here.

  • Posting now allows you to add categories to your posts, using the toolbar.
  • Replying now allows you to view the item you’re replying to, just tap on the “replying to” text.
  • In replies, you can now @-mention someone and it will auto-suggest anyone in your following list.
  • Your profile now displays your Pins that you have earned on Micro.blog.
  • Along with the pins the profile screens have been updated for easier navigation with clearer buttons and actions.
  • The timeline now attempts to stay nicely on your last post, allowing new posts to show without loosing your spot. Also includes a “new” indicator.
  • Feed sync has greatly been improved and should work faster, and also update past posts much better.
  • Nitpicky settings, found in the “More” screen, for your pleasure - Show character count when typing, display full names and so much more like the image proxy for when you need to save a bit data.
  • An overhaul of the “More” screen.
  • The reply and post screens have been overhauled to work much better.
  • Fixes issues with account switching.
  • Many under-the-hood UI tweaks, for example tweaked swipe actions.
  • And so much more

2020.4

Now that we have .3 out the door, I'm slowly going to start work on the .4 for this year. I'm not 100% sure where it will go, however I have a list that I want to try and tackle.

Again, this will be a one month cycle (give or take) and will be available via the TestFlight channel in the coming week or so. However, just note that I will be making a few changes to TestFlight availability and I'll be announcing more on that this week. Hint: there will be a different list for "nightly" builds - but will be invite only.

Anyway, thank you so very much to everyone using Gluon! ❤️✌️
